I moved

Last month, I moved. I moved from Taku to Saga. Taku is a nice place, but there aren’t any jobs there, and my girlfriend lives in Saga, so I decided to move.

The place I moved to is smaller than my previous apartment, so I have to organize my stuff and use the space I have well. I finally got some drawers to do get that done.

But, I ended up having to pay around $600 as a result of the final inspection of my apartment. There was some black stuff on several places on the wall. There was certainly some bike oil in a few places, but there is some kind of rubber or foam on the walls, so it’s tough to clean. I think that stuff gets dirty easily. But, I had money, so I payed the money right away, so that’s done.

The apartment I live in now feels a bit small, but if I use my head, I think I can set my furniture up well. The kitchen is small, so I had a feeling that if I put the table I have in there that it would be a problem, but actually once I put it in there, it actually wasn’t so bad. lol

I want to buy a sofa sometime, but right now I’m a bit low on money, so I have to wait.

My most embarrassing moments

Yesterday, I was reminded of one of my most embarrassing experiences. Since embarrassing experiences make for good reading, I thought I’d let the whole internet know how stupid I am. lol

Several years ago, I did something quite unusual for me at the time: I drove a car by myself to California to meet a girl. I’d never done anything even remotely like that before. I was just a stupid nerd, playing games, watching anime, reading books, etc. Everything I wanted was inside, in my room. I never went out and didn’t have any friends.

Then I went on a crazy adventure, driving 17 hours from my home to San Francisco. Some homeless guy offered me directions to my destination in exchange for some change I had. Unfortunately, his directions were completely wrong. lol I knew the were wrong, but I gave him the change anyway since he tried. He wanted my crackers, too, but I told him that they were for me. lol I stayed at hostel that night.

The next day, I met the girl and some other people she was with. I drove them around and had a good time with them that day. That evening, I went into their hotel room to talk and have some drinks. Actually, the girl and her friend went out together to get drinks. They asked me what I wanted to drink. Since I don’t really like alcohol, I asked for something else instead: milk. That’s not the embarrassing part, though. I’m not ashamed to say that I love milk. lol

After we spent some time talking, the girl escorted me back to my hostel about 10 minutes away. I said good night, then went to my room and went to sleep.

Then, a short time later, someone knocked at the door to my room. It was the girl. She said she forgot how to get back to her hotel. It was night time, and San Francisco can be a bit scary at night, so I took her by the hand and escorted her back to her hotel.

When we got to the entrance, she turned around, got close, and gently rubbed her face in my chest and then looked innocently into my eyes. As I held her in my arms, it never occurred to me that she probably didn’t need my help to get back to her hotel. It was for that moment of embrace that she came back.

And then I ran.

That’s right, I ran. I said, “Okay, good night!” to the girl looking deep into my eyes and literally ran as fast as I could in my pajamas and sandals for half a block, never looking back. At the time, it never even occurred to me how ridiculous that was. She was sending me clear, unambiguous signals of interest that I completely missed. Her look said, “Kiss me,” but instead I got out of there like a fat, white Usain Bolt. lol It’s only years later that I thought back to that day and realized how stupid I was. But, I was a 24 year-old virgin, so what do you expect? I’d never even held a girl’s hands until that day.

If you haven’t closed the browser window in utter embarrassment, then you’re probably wondering, “What happened yesterday that reminded you of that experience?”

Oh dear, you just had to ask, didn’t you? It will be my masochistic pleasure to answer your question. Hold on to your butts because this one’s a doozie.

Yesterday, I went on a date. It was my second date with that girl. We went out on Saturday, so it wasn’t even a week before we met each other again. She is a professional photographer, so I wanted to go out and take pictures with her on our second date. She picked me up in her car and then we went to a shrine and then up a small mountain in the area I live in.

We walked around, took some pictures, and then chatted at the top of the mountain, looking down at the town I live in. The weather wasn’t very good, so the view wasn’t very impressive. However, since it was so cloudy, I was able to safely stay up there for an hour or so to chat with her. No need to worry about getting sunburnt.

Unfortunately, it was a little hard to relax and chat because there were so many bugs at the top! There were swarms of tiny flies that where getting stuck on my sweaty arms and landing on my white shirt. It was crazy. The girl was sitting right across from me, but none of the bugs were landing on her. I, on the other hand, had to constantly swat them away.

After about an hour or two on the mountain, we went to a local restaurant and had dinner. We continued chatting long after both of us were done eating. But we were both getting sleepy, and it was getting late, so she took me back to my apartment.

Things had gone well all day. We talk every day online, sometimes for hours a night. All indications are that she likes me.

When she stopped in front of my apartment, I said thank you, opened the door, and then she said, “Wait!” I turned around and looked at her, then she said, “Ah, uh, just, uh…” She was on her phone, searching for directions back to her place. I asked her, “You alright?” and she said, “Yeah, I’m just looking for directions.” Again, I started to get out of the car, but again she said, “Wait!” She wasn’t done.

So, I waited. A few moments later, she said, “Okay, I got it.” This time, I said, “Okay, thanks. It was fun.” She said, “Yeah, I had fun.” Then I said the common Japanese expression that is usually said to coworkers after a long day at work, to which she replied, “What?” In a flash, I bowed, got out of the car, turned around, said goodbye, then turned around and went inside. I don’t remember if she even had a chance to look up from her phone before I went inside. lol

Again, I ran away.

This time, however, I realized immediately after shutting the door that I’d made a mistake. I sat in my chair for about 30 or 40 minutes thinking, “What the hell is wrong with me?” Looking back on the whole day, I realized that I was thinking way to much. For various reasons, I avoided being too aggressive. That led me to repeat the same mistake in Taku that I made in San Francisco years ago.

To be fair to myself, this girl is different from the one from before. Unlike Ms. San Francisco, Ms. Saga doesn’t send out such clear signals. She is putting up a wall, in fact. She’s sending me mixed signals, which is something that I have no experience dealing with, so at the decisive moment, I had nothing to guide me in the right direction.

But, this time, I have a chance to correct my mistake. Time to take a risk!

Crashed my bike

Wednesday morning, I crashed my bike on the way to work. It had rained a little early in the morning, but by the time I left my apartment, the road was mostly dry.

Here’s what happened. Usually I ride my bike on the road because it is safer for me and for pedestrians. However, there is a long stretch of road that has a wide sidewalk with lots of visibility that I ride on because I feel it’s safe. I don’t have to worry about the big trucks that drive on that road, either.

So, in order to move from the road to the sidewalk, I leaned a bit to my left. I had moved from the road to the sidewalk many times before, but this time, I made a critical mistake. The truth is that the area I live in isn’t very road bike friendly. The small incline between the road and the sidewalk has a small step—it doesn’t curve up smoothly. Usually, I am conscious of the step and make sure to turn my front tire to get up the incline without any problems.

Yesterday, however, I let my guard down. I didn’t turn my tire enough, so my tires got caught on the lip. The momentum of my upper body continued to the left, so I tipped over and fell forward onto the sidewalk. As you might expect, I cushioned the fall with my hands, so they and my left arm took the majority of the impact.

What happened next is interesting to me. I instinctually reacted to the fall by rolling up in a ball for a second. The next second, my thoughts were, “I don’t have time for this,” and “Is my bike okay?”, so I got up and checked my condition and the condition of my bike. I wasn’t in very good shape, but my bike seemed mostly okay. It’s weird that my first reaction was to roll up in a ball, since I actually didn’t feel much pain at the time, and rolling up in a ball doesn’t help the pain anyway. lol It must be an primal instinct to protect the body.

At first, I didn’t feel very much pain. But when I looked at my bloody hands and the skin peeling off, I knew that it was going to start hurting soon, so I fixed a couple of issues with my bike quickly and then headed to school. I knew that the school nurse would be able to give me a little aid, and then I would be able to go to the hospital next door to the school to get a more thorough checking. Besides, I was already half-way to school already, so there was no reason for me stop. I got back up on my bike and road to school.

After getting some help from the nurse and talking to some teachers to let them know I had crashed, I went to the hospital. I have to say, I was really unimpressed with how the hospital handled me. I don’t mind waiting 20 minutes to see someone, but after I laid down on the hospital bed, neither the doctor nor the nurses showed any sympathy. Nobody said, “Oh, that must hurt!” or “Don’t worry, just relax and we’ll fix you up.” In fact, they were more worried about how to communicate with me in English (even though I said I could speak Japanese). The doctor told a junior male nurse, “Say something,” meaning say something in English. Eventually he did—in Japanese—because he didn’t remember “Where are you from?”, an expression students learn in their first semester in junior high school.

The truth is that I have always feared that rural hospitals would be inferior to city hospitals. I’ve confirmed that by going to city doctors for eye problems, shoulder problems, etc. and had mostly positive experiences there. The rural hospital, on the other hand, lived up to all the bad expectations I had. They’re clearly used to dealing with ancient, tanned farmers and their wives, not so much with people with white skin. That’ll teach me to be more careful while riding my bike! For now on, no crashing in the inaka! Only crash in the city.

Elementary kid stories

A couple of days ago, after lunch was over, I took a walk around the school. It’s a good way of making myself available to students. It was something that was suggested to me by other ALTs as a good means of student interaction. I walked around the 1st-3rd grade area, but I think most of the students were outside, so I went mostly unnoticed. On the other hand, when I walked around the 4th-6th grade area, a pack of 5th grade girls greeted me warmly and asked me a bunch of questions.

While talking to them, they laughed and made lots of noise, attracting some boys who joined the party. After spending some time with them, one of the girls asked me to hug one of the boys, so I did. I like it. In fact, he was very nice and told the girls, “He smells good!” lol I think he smelled the deodorant that I use. If I don’t use it, I definitely won’t smell good. White people have to wear deodorant because our armpits will start to smell very bad. Japanese don’t have that problem because they don’t have a certain gland in their armpits that white people do…

At least, that’s what I thought until some time last year. One day, I was in the classroom waiting for class to start while the teacher was preparing some things. While she was doing that, I noticed a smell that I recognized, but I thought it was me. lol However, it was definitely her. It’s a small classroom with lots of students, so some students have to sit very close to the teacher near the front of the classroom. Some of the boys were saying, “Something stinks…”

Fortunately I wore my deodorant that day. lol

Yesterday, I ate lunch with the elementary school kids and had fun talking to them. There was one boy that had called my taco meat poop the last time I ate with them, so today he said, “Poop!” as I walked to an open desk near him. I gave him a dirty look and sat down, but it didn’t bother him at all. lol He kept saying “Poop!” over and over until I finally showed my chicken and salad, which definitely didn’t look like poop.

However, some of the girls asked me, “You don’t have any carbohydrates?” Of course, I responded, “No, I’m on a low-carb diet.” They were skeptical of such a diet. One of the bigger, more mature girls said, “You can’t eat that much meat and call it a diet.” Haha! Some 6th grader trying to school me on dieting. I said, “Oh really? I didn’t know that,” to which she replied, “That’s normal.”

I cannot let that challenge go unanswered. Now I have decided to eat lots of meat and vegetables in their classroom for lunch every day and lose weight at the same time. I’ll eat the greasiest, saltiest, most aromatic meats right in front of her, maintaining eye contact the whole time. I’ll grin wide like that cat from Alice in Wonderland, grease running down both sides of my mouth, when I see her reaction to my baffling body transformation. I’ll be like a mixture of the Joker and Fat Bastard. I’ll cackle wildly in her direction, releasing globs of greasy half-chewed meat on to her lunch tray. It’ll be a moment she never forgets. She will become a vegan.

You can’t let 6th graders mouth off.

Crazy 8th grader

***

A two weeks ago, I did a lesson with three students that are “emotionally disabled”. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but those three students were taught English separately from other students. It was the first time I or the teacher taught English in that class (usually they have special support teachers). Because of that, the teacher wanted to understand their level, so we played a game that I found on the internet. For the most part, the students seemed pretty normal compared to their peers, so I’m not sure if they have learning disabilities or not.

However, one of the students seemed a little loud compared to the other students. Since we had so much time in a small room together, when I went into a classroom to eat lunch last week, he wanted me to sit with him and some other students (he eats with the other students). While eating lunch I began to understand why he is separated from the other students. He seems like he would be quite disruptive. But, during lunch, he was funny. He acted a bit like an elementary school student, but he also had a sense of comedy.

He acted a bit how I might act at his age, actually. lol His sense of comedy is better than mine, though. There were three girls sitting with us. I remember so clearly when he looked at me straight in the eyes and said, “My balls…my balls…”, with pain in his voice, then said, “…itch.”

The girl next to me started cracking up.

Then, while he had food in his mouth, he started coughing and a bit of rice flew out his mouth and onto his desk, grossing a couple of the girls out. Shortly afterward, he looked at them and started to make a strange Mongolian throat singing kind of noise. As you can imagine, they were worried what the hell was going on. A second or two later as he reached his climax, he pulled out a box of tissues from out of his desk. The crowd went wild. lol

Finally, as lunch time was wrapping up, he took his tray to the front of the class where the other trays were being collected. Then, in a grand finale, he let out the best junior high school belch he could muster. I wanted to laugh, but I felt that the teacher might be mad if I seemed to endorse that kind of behavior. In hindsight, I should have taken the opportunity to teach the class the expression “Eww, gross”. lol

I think I’ll try to eat with his class more often.

A Journey to Asakura

This past weekend, I went to a place called Asakura on my bike. It was about 40 miles from where I live in Taku. I originally didn't plan on going to Asakura, but about one week ago, a friend living in Asakura said we should go cycling together around there, to which I jokingly replied, "First I need to get my bike to Asakura." I meant it as a joke, but then I started to wonder how far I could go, so I decided to take a journey east. About 40 minutes into my journey, I felt quite tired, so I took a break and ate something at a convenience store. After I got done eating, from the time I decided to give it one more push, I gradually started to regain energy, and was even able to get as far as Yoshinogari Park. The park was already closed, so I rested right outside.

Yoshinogari Park is quite far from where I live, so I had to decide whether to continue my journey east or to go home. On top of that, the sky was filled with dark clouds, so if I didn't go back at that time and later decided to go back home, then my chances of getting wet would go up. In other words, if I didn't go back then, going back would get harder and harder to do. But, I still had the will and strength to continue further, so I decided to push forward. After it got dark, I knew that I would be able to make it to Asakura. I contacted my friend and ended up staying at his place.

(That night, a storm rolled threw.)

The next day, my friend and I cycled to Akizuki, nicknamed "Little Kyoto", climbed a mountain, and then I went home. Right now, my legs are quite tired. lol But, I had a productive weekend. By the way, it's about 60 miles to Nagasaki from Taku, so I am planning on taking a trip there someday! The mountain roads on the way to Nagasaki are scary, though...

What does it mean to be strong?

About a month ago, the host of a podcast I was listening to said something very interesting. He said that the “call of the bed is strong”. I wrote about it in a previous blog, if you want to read it.

Those words have been on my mind ever since I heard them. He also said, “It’s so easy to be weak.”

Dear reader, do you think of yourself as weak?

You’re probably thinking that, although you may have many weak points, on the whole, you wouldn’t consider yourself to be weak. “I work hard, I study hard, and I’m always looking for new experiences. I may not be physically very strong, since I don’t exercise. I may over-eat too, but otherwise, none of my other weak points are such a big deal.”

But, is that really true? Are you really being honest with yourself? Are you looking at yourself honestly?

“The call of the bed is strong.” Those words echoed inside my head. I always had that feeling for the longest time, but I never put that feeling into words. I have always been the kind of person that goes to bed late and wakes up late. Waking up early was too hard, and going to bed late was so easy. I’d tried many times to start waking up earlier, but I couldn’t do it. Being weak is easy. Going back to bed was easy. When I connected the ideas the host of that podcast said, that being weak is easy and the call of the bed is strong, I realized that I have always been weak.

Not only that, in multiple ways, I am weak.

My Japanese hasn’t been getting better.

I’ve gotten fat again.

I haven’t been doing any work to become a photographer.

I haven’t been learning any other skills.

I’ve been playing too many games.

I’ve spent too much time in my apartment.

I’m physically weak because I haven’t been doing any exercises.

I have many weaknesses. I hadn’t faced those weaknesses and acknowledged them, but after listening to that podcast, I felt like I had to.

And after I did, I decided to begin working to become stronger. The first thing I started doing was exercising and weight lifting to increase my physical strength. I still don’t have a good weight-lifting routine yet, but I plan to. On top of that, I’ve started doing yoga. I do that about every day.

Next, I need to lose weight. I restarted my ketogenic diet. Resolving to spend the money it takes, I looked over my finances, then started the diet, making sure to get enough nutrition and taking vitamins. When I’ve tried to restart it before, I’ve had a problem with my eyes and stopped the diet, so I am really focusing on getting enough nutrition to protect my eyes. On top of that, I need to be careful about getting dehydrated. Last week, I woke up early and took a bike ride, but in the middle of it, I got incredibly tired and went home. Afterward, my left eye started to hurt, and then I started to feel weak. I drank lots of water, but I needed more than just water. I needed other nutrients, so I took those. But, the energy I had in the morning went away, and then I took a long nap in the afternoon. I was really weak for the next two days. My left eye seemed like it was getting better, but then I got dry eye again. Two days ago I went to the eye doctor and got some medicine for it. I’ve had dry eye about three or four times before. The medicine works well, but I’m waiting to see what will happen after I’m done taking it. When I’ve had this problem before, I ended my diet and immediately ate some carbs. The dry eye went away after that. For now, I’ll continue the diet and see what happens.

By the way, when I started the diet, I was about 187lbs, and now I’m about 178lbs. lol I can feel my clothes start to fit me properly again. Before I came to Japan, I was about 160lbs, so I hope to reach that point again soon.

Working to become a photographer is a bit more complicated. Before going out to practice taking pictures, I need to have a goal in mind. Until now, I just kind of go with the flow and end up not getting very good results. Of course, even good photographers find it difficult to get good street photos that they can be satisfied with, but if I plan my practice sessions, I feel like my chances of getting pictures I’m satisfied with will go up. But, in order to take pictures, I need to go some place, and that takes money. If I go to Fukuoka, for example, then my round-trip commute will cost me about $45! If I did that once a week, every week, it would come out to about $160.

But, the bigger problem is selling photos. There are many different paths to becoming a professional photographer. I need to choose one, but to be honest, I’m not sure which one to take. Since I’m an American, and since I’m working, there are a lot of barriers I have to overcome or else I won’t get anywhere. Becoming a photographer is a long-term goal, so I don’t need to hurry, but I also need to focus on getting practice so that I don’t procrastinate like I usually do.

I am gonna work hard to become stronger in a bunch of different ways. Bed is nice, but I’m bored with weak Micah. I’m looking forward to making a strong Micah.

New Semester, New Schools

Last week, the next semester started. Tuesday of last week was the first day. That day, it was pouring outside. I take my bicycle to school, so I got soaking wet. When I got to school, I immediately went to the bathroom and wrang out my shirt and pants. But still, my clothes didn’t completely dry until around after lunch time.

Last semester, I only went to one school, but this semester, I work at two other schools. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to school, so it isn’t that far, but there are a lot of cars and the road is a bit narrow, so it is a little scary. I hope I don’t die. lol

This semester, I decided to bring my own lunch right from the beginning. I am a genius at cooking. It’s pretty awesome to be able to make something that I can look forward to eating every day for lunch. I owe my cooking skills to my mom, so I am quite grateful to her. However, if I look at the food I make, it actually looks like the food my dad makes, which kind of sucks. lol

Has a spider ever made you laugh before?

The intruder

One evening near the beginning of summer, while I was using my laptop in bed, I noticed something on the wall opposite me. I took out my smartphone and shined a light on it. My first reaction? *Sigh* "Another one?"

Yes, another spider. Before seeing this spider, I had evicted another one from my apartment after it spent several days sniffing my dirty underpants or whatever it is spiders do when there isn't any food for them to eat. But, when I first shined the spotlight on the intruder, I waited. If it moved away from my bed, then I would let it go sniff my underpants. Honestly, I don't care if there is a spider living with me. I had a spider living in my bathroom in Kobe for months. It made a web in the bottom corner of room near the floor. Every day I would stare at the spider's collection of fruit fly corpses under its web while I made dirty noises in the toilet. Sometimes I would leave without flushing the toilet just to attract more flies for it to eat. Seriously, it was awesome.

Unfortunately, this more recent spider wasn't satisfied living in the bathroom, eating turd-gobbling flies for the rest of its life. It wanted to hang out with me in bed, which I found particularly not awesome, and quite frankly, disrespectful.

That white dot is the reflection of the flash off its eyes.

After spending about 10 or 15 minutes posting a picture of it to Facebook and blasting it with the disco light setting on my phone, it started to make it's move. It took a few steps in my bed's direction, then stopped.

Then it started to dance.

I don't know if it was inspired by the flashing lights or what, but it started to move toward my bed like a praying mantis. It was like he was thinking, "He can't see me if I walk like this," all while rocking back and forth on a bright white wall with a flashlight on him. It was the silliest thing I'd ever seen a spider do. I chuckled a bit, then decided it was time to get boogy-spider out of my apartment.

So, I got up and got a broom. Actually, it's one of those sweeper thingies with a large, flat, rectangular end that you attach a wet cloth to. My window was open, screen door closed.

I used the sweeper to wrangle it closer to the window. Of course, it was afraid and bolted towards the window. Once there, I moved the sweeper closer to get it to move toward the opening in the window.

Instead, it jumped at the sweeper! It went *thunk* on the sweeper and fell down awkwardly. I remember the sound it made so clearly. Every hair in my body stood up as if to say, "What. The hell. Was that?!" The little badass was ready to fight a giant!

Right, I forgot to mention something. My room doesn't have any lights in it. The only way I could see anything was with my phone's flashlight. It's nighttime. It's pitch black except for the flashlight. The spider has attacked my sweeper and fallen somewhere, either somewhere on the window or on to my bed. My bed is a thin mattress-topper on top of a futon laying on the floor. There are so many places for it to hide down there. And there I was, a giant wielding a giant weapon using giant technology to search for a tiny thing with legs that might be hiding near my pillow.

But, I couldn't find it. I started thinking it hadn't fallen onto my bed after all, so I looked around the window and found it crouching on the screen door in a spider's version of the fetal position. I shut the window and trapped between the screen and the window. That's when I took the picture you saw at the beginning.

I left boogy-spider there between the screen and the window and the next morning, it was gone. It left the same way it came: through a small opening between the frames of the window and the screen.

Since then, I've been using the air conditioner.

You're still alive?!

This is a cat.

It's been quite a long time since I wrote in my diary, so I think I need to write a “catch-up” one to briefly highlight what has been going on with me since I last wrote. The last time I wrote was in my blog. The last entry is about common English mistakes Japanese people make, written on March 15th, more than three months ago. So what has happened since then?

I graduated from college
I got a job working in rural Japan as an ALT.
I've visited Fukuoka.
I've eaten many donuts at Mister Donut, and even at Krispy Kreme.
I've participated in a couple of school events.
I've talked briefly with the mayor of the town I am living in.
I have helped teach English in elementary and junior high school classes.
I had a showdown with some spiders in my apartment.
I've started planning for the future.
I've started reading more Japanese material.

This is, of course, not an exhaustive list, just the highlights. Since there is so much, I've decided to only write about the things other people are actually interested in. So, if you want me to write more, tell me what you want me to write about!

A cat-type of person

Today, for my Japanese class, we talked a little bit about traits of “cat-like” and “dog-like” people. It's one of those common topics that nearly everybody has talked about with friends or in school before. I've known that I'm a cat-like person for a long time, but somehow that fact has become especially clear since I've come to Kobe.

I don't mind being alone, and even enjoy it much of the time. When I'm with others, I often break from the group and do what I want to do. When I was the leader of a group during a summer trip, my group commented that they had lots of freedom, and perhaps too much freedom. That's largely because I didn't tell them where we should go or what we should do, and I often acted alone rather than to gather and lead the group.

Yesterday was my birthday and the first time I've been away from my family for my birthday. I spent the day the same as I have most days here in Kobe—alone. Strangely, I wasn't too bothered by that. Sure, it was a bit lonely. It would have been nice to play some games with friends, but I didn't cry myself to sleep, either. (;^_^)

Last night, although it was colder than hell, I decided to go to a local event called Kobe Luminare. It's a memorial for a devastating 1995 earthquake that hit Kobe wherein some Christmas light-like display is put on. Although it is a memorial for a tragic event, many couples were there to check out the lights. In spite of the fact that I am a cat-like person, I did feel a bit out of place surrounded by couples holding hands. After all, cats may enjoy their freedom, but they aren't robots, either. Some cats even act like goldfish droppings from time to time!

My Thoughts Today

***

Today, I went to a mall near my apartment to meet a friend. He and I are going to teach an English class together soon at that mall, and we were going to hand out fliers to advertise the class. In the end we weren't able to hand out the fliers, since we hadn't asked for permission. My friend left, but I stayed behind and read a book in the mall's cafeteria.

Recently I finished reading The Enigma of Japanese Power and began reading a book called Teaching With Your Mouth Shut. While reading it, my thoughts wandered about, dwelling on what the author wrote, pondering various things related to teaching English in Japan, imagining things that the music I was listening to invoked, and thinking about a Youtube project I'm planning. I'm writing the English part of this entry in the cafeteria now. I feel that my mind is unusually active and my thoughts positive, perhaps because of my earlier experience with my friend. Or maybe because I'm not in my room? Maybe it's because the chairs here are way more comfortable than my own? Or maybe it's because of the book I'm reading? Feeling a bit hungry. Why does the mall keep shaking?

Feeling down in the dumps

***

For a while, I've felt a little down in the dumps. I've been waking up tired, trying to read books but haven't been able to keep my eyes open, having trouble concentrating in class, etc. I just haven't felt like doing anything. I've felt this way before, but I never really thought about why. I just thought I was lazy.

However, I gave it some thought and I think I know a few reasons why I feel this way. One reason is that I've felt lonely. I sometimes don't leave my apartment for several days, so I sometimes don't have any human contact for some time. When I'm alone with my thoughts, my negative thoughts tend to echo inside my head. They make me feel stressed out and depressed, which contributes to my lack of energy or drive to do anything.

Another reason I think I've been feeling tired is because I've been spending too much time not studying. I spend too much time reading Reddit comments, listening to radio shows or watching videos on Youtube, playing video games, etc. Really, the problem is I do those things first before working on important stuff. If I read stuff on Reddit or some other websites, then I don't have the energy to read the books I need to read.

I also think that I'm just bored of school. I enjoyed the classes at Evergreen because of the interaction I had with other people, but sitting and listening to a teacher teach Japanese is getting really boring. But, even if I was at Evergreen, I think I'd be bored. I'm just sick of school.

Going out more and using my computer less seems to help, so I've been spending a lot more time at school studying. I think the exercise of riding my bike to school also helps me feel better.

The Semester has started

***

The last semester for the year at Hyogo University, and fall quarter at Evergreen began on Monday. I feel different this semester compared to six months ago. I guess I used to the school and feel like I know what I need to do this quarter, so I can keep going without being anxious or worried about anything.

From now on, I don't think I'll be taking the intercultural communications or seminar classes I took last semester. I need to read a bunch of English books, so I'm going to focus on that and move forward while thinking about my future as an English teacher.

The book I'm reading right now is called The Enigma of Japanese Power. The author is critical of Japan's government, business world, etc. and goes into detail explaining them. It's quite interesting. If I can, I'll finish reading it this weekend and write about it.

My Relationship with Money, part 3

Have you ever been asked a favor by a friend or co-worker, and responded by telling them you would help them, but that it would cost them some money? For example, maybe since you're handy with cars, you've been asked to help them fix their car. Or maybe since you're good with computers, you've been asked to help with someone's computer. In that case, what did you do?  Did you say you'd help if they paid you? I've never asked for money. I always just say, "Sure!" right away without even thinking about money and helped friends or acquaintances. If I didn't do that, what kind of person would I be? I've never considered not helping someone if I'm wasn't getting paid. If I did that, money would put up a wall between me and others. I'd lose my humanity.

Or so I had thought, but there is another way of thinking about it. If you asked for money, but your coworker or acquaintance said, "I don't have any money. Can't you just do it for free?", what would you think? Conversely, you'd think that that person wasn't acknowledging your humanity, right? It's rude. For sure, money is a wall, but it's a wall that protects you from people from people that don't respect your time or effort. Everybody needs money to live.

Well, that's true, but until recently, I didn't really respect myself, so it was easy for others to take advantage of me. I felt other people were more important than me.

On top of that, I thought that I didn't really need money. Well, not quite. I was used to not having any money, so I limited the things I did to those things that I could do without money. Actually, that's not true either. It wasn't that I was limited, but rather I limited what I wanted to do. In other words, I limited my expectations. If you avoid wanting something, then when you can't have it, you won't be sad, right? Rather than going out, I stayed at home and played games. Of course, there were games I wanted to play, but since I didn't have any money, I couldn't buy them. That's why I played free games. I didn't have any money, so I couldn't really make any friends or have a girlfriend. I thought that they'd want to go have fun out somewhere. Since I couldn't have what I wanted, I simply limited what I wanted.

That's weird, right? Limiting the things that I want and the things I want to do, rather than working and making money is really weird. During a certain period of time, I had to limit the things I wanted to get or do, so I got used to and actually became rather bad at chasing after the things that I want.

I think there are other people like me. A comedian I like named Bill Burr has a podcast. On that podcast he talks about various stuff. He also gives advice. One guy asked Bill Burr for some girl advice. He got on a bus, sat down next to a pretty lady, and had a nice chat with her. He thought that he'd like to go out with her, but he didn't ask her for her phone number. He said he didn't want to ask for it and be "that guy".

"That guy" is a very vague expression. Bill responds by saying, "What guy? The guy that falls in love? The guy that gets laid?" In other words, the guy that asked the question didn't want to be rude to the lady. He didn't want to be the guy that targets a pretty lady and decides to sit next to her to get her number.

In addition to answering the guy's question, Bill said something interesting.

"Be 'that guy'!"

"Be the guy that asks for what he wants. Be respectful of other people, but you gotta be the guy.... You gotta beat that fucking thought outta your head. You can be so respectful and so like, not wanting to rock the boat that you never even fuckin', you know, get what you want in life. Because life doesn't give a shit whether your dreams come true or not. Okay?"

What he said really struck a cord with me. For me, asking for what I want is hard. I'm like a kid that wants everybody to like him and doesn't want to be a burden on anybody. I don't value myself as a person.

So, when I was doing the volunteer work before, I thought that there was no way I'd be able to get any money, but I'd be able to gain some experience, so without rocking the boat or asking for any money, I just did the volunteer work. I thought that just getting experience was good enough. But, that isn't a good way of thinking. You can't pay bills with experience. You can't buy food with experience. It's completely wrong to think that experience is enough.

While living with my parents, I'd thought of stuff like that before, but until I came to Japan and started buying food and paying bills with cash, I hadn't really felt to existence and importance of money. Until my teacher gave me an opportunity to do a part-time job, I hadn't thought much about my history with money. Until talking to my friend, I didn't have the confidence to negotiate my salary. Until I heard Bill Burr say, "Be that guy!", I hadn't ever thought about becoming a guy that asks for what he wants.

If I want to become independent, I need money. I'm not really interested in money itself, but there are things that I want that I can only get with money. In order to get those things, I'm going to become a person that asks for what they want.

By the way, I got confident in myself and asked my teacher about the money. I requested double the money. lol The teacher said, "That would be difficult...", but it's good that I at least asked, I think. I still have a bit of an awkward relationship with money, but in time, I'm sure we'll become good friends. (^_^)

My Relationship with Money, part 2

When my teacher asked if I wanted to do the part time English teaching job, it brought up memories I have related to money. When I was living in Texas, I worked at the company my dad was employed at. It was like an internship. It didn't pay much, but I wanted to save up as much money as I could and go to college. However, some things came up and in the end I gave most of my money to others, thus I wasn't able to save up much money or go to college. I don't remember how I felt at that time very well, but it was irritating to give my money to other people. But, I was giving it in order to help someone important, so I didn't think I had much of a choice.

After the internship ended, I didn't have any job. Before that job, and for 2 or 3 years afterward, I was a NEET (a Japanese term for someone that is Not Employed, getting an Education, or Trying to do so). I didn't really feel like finding a job. But, by coincidence and with my dad's help, I was able to get a job where he worked again. That job was tough and stressful at first, but I worked hard and got through it. My coworkers were funny and were like my friends, so I didn't really feel like I was working. With that job, I was able to save a lot of money.

About a year and a half later, my dad lost his job and found another one far away from where we lived. I've previously written about this before, but I had to decide whether to move out and become independent, or to follow my family. After I decided to follow my family, I continued working for another week. During that week, one of my coworkers said something interesting. He kept saying, "Time to man up!" In other words, he was telling me to move out on my own. But, I wasn't really interesting in being manly, so even if I was told that, it didn't really affect me.

Several years later, after I had gotten into college, I did volunteer work in an English classroom in order to become an English teacher myself. I worked hard and got lots of experience through that work. I talked about my experiences with my Japanese teacher as well. When I told her that I was going to continue volunteering during the next quarter, she said, "You need to get paid!" I wasn't really close with the teacher, so it was a little weird for her to say that. Not only that, but I didn't think I needed any money because I was gaining some experience. Just getting that experience was enough, I thought.

My Relationship with Money, part 1

There is some money on this strange kappa's head

Since coming to Japan and living alone, I've become more aware of the existence and need for money. In Japan, it's normal to use cash rather than cards, so I'm not sure how many times I've given money to some other people and slowly seen the cash in my wallet disappear. In the US, since I use cards and don't see the cash in my wallet disappear, I didn't really think to much about the existence of money.

Last week, my seminar teacher gave me the money I earned doing the volunteer work from before and then asked if I was interested in getting a job right now. (He is the same teacher that created the volunteer opportunity for me before.) He seems to want to create an opportunity for me to work teaching English again, but this time I'd be teaching to adults. After he introduced the idea to me and then asked if I'd like to give it a shot, I asked him to give me a chance to think about it. Since the past volunteer work was harder than I expected and I had some problems with it, I decided it was best to not agree to do this new job right away.

After that, I've been thinking about whether I should take the job or not. I asked the teacher for some details, and when money came up, I wasn't really excited at first, but I thought, "Well, even if I can't get much money, I can get some experience." When I told a friend of mine about the wage I'd be making, she said, "That is low! Really low!" I thought so, too. "But, since the wage is so low, I won't have many responsibilities. The students and my teacher won't be expecting much from me, so I can relax without feeling much pressure," I said.

But, that's not a good way of thinking. All I'm doing is avoiding responsibility and not worrying about money. In the future, I won't be able to do that. But, if I can't get a better salary, what should I do? I didn't really know what to do. Since my teacher is giving me an opportunity to get some experience, it would be a waste if I didn't take the opportunity, right? I just don't want to get a job, do I? Since he is making such a nice opportunity for me, I should be grateful to the teacher and do the job, even if the money isn't so great, shouldn't I?

At least, that's the kind of stuff I've been thinking.

English Conversation Club

The first day I went to school, I was invited to go join the English, so yesterday I went to join one of their meetings. I'm glad I did. At the beginning of the meeting, everybody introduced themselves and then we made groups of three and chatted. However, rather than having a normal ol' conversation with the club leader and one other member, we played a card game. Before I left my apartment to go take some pictures and look for other clubs (like the photography club), I put a card game called Star Realms in my backpack. I thought that it would be fun and might come in handy as English practice at the club, so I took it with me.

As expected, it was fun. One of my conversation partners likes card and board games, rather than video games, so it was a good I brought it. One of his friends is interested in games like that, too, so they may end up buying it some time.

After we finished the game, I talked with a couple of the Chinese members of the club. Their English was pretty good. Everybody there is studying either economics or business management, so I was able to talk with them about finding work. Of course, if you learn a foreign language, it has an affect on finding work. We talked about future plans and what kind of work we want to do.

I asked one of them where he wanted to work. He said that he first wants to work in Japan for a while to experience Japanese business culture. After a few years of that, he wants to go back to China and work for a company that has a relationship with a Japanese company. When I asked why, he said he wants to live close to his family. Japanese salaries are better it seems, but he wants to live close to his parents. He said it would be ideal to live in China while working for a Japanese company and getting a Japanese-sized paycheck.

When I talked with them, it made me think about my own future.
