Climbed Devil's Nose Mountain and Danced with the Grim Reaper

Wait here."

Wrong. This will no longer be 'Freedom Forest, but 'Micah's Forest'!"
Lunch for one.

Click the photo to make it bigger.

I think this guy liked my computer.

Where I hit the rail with my left arm.

My right leg. It doesn't look bad now, but I'm sure that I'll get a big ol' bruise later.

The right brake lever bracket is bent. I'd rather have gotten a flat tire.

Monday last week, my school had a school trip, so I ended up doing some mountain climbing with the students that day. It was fun. The elementary school kids talked to me and asked me a bunch of questions. There was one girl that had fun teasing me. She was funny. One of the first grade girls talked to me about food, then asked me to eat lunch with her, so I ate with her.

About the mountain: it’s named “Devil’s Nose Mountain”. Devil’s Nose has a large park, and if you walk up to the peak, you can get a nice view of Taku and other surrounding towns. On the day of the school trip, I climbed up to the peak by myself. I think I was the only one that did that. But, the moment I saw the view, I knew I’d be coming back soon.

And then on Wednesday last week, I climbed Devil’s Nose Mountain again. But, that time, instead of hiking, I went cycling!

Devil’s Nose is about 6 or 7 miles from my apartment. Even though I’ve lived in Taku for more than a year, until Monday last week, I’d never been there! What have I been doing with my life? But since the school trip, I’ve been back to Devil’s Nose twice, including yesterday.

Alright, let me show the view I had yesterday.

It was a bit cloudy yesterday, so it wasn’t as pretty as on Wednesday, but it was still nice.

If you take a look at the mountain on the left, you’ll notice that there’s a hiking trail! When I walked up there, I realized that the trail is quite long. On the way up, I had a sudden urge to go to the bathroom, so I quickly headed for the toilet. lol After I got inside, I was worried that they might not have a western-style toilet, but there was one so I could relax. After getting in the stall, I immediately killed three mosquitoes. I reminded me of a childhood memory. lol

Places like Devil’s Nose are really quite rare in Japan, I think. In spite of that, on both Wednesday and yesterday, there were very few people! Rather than complaining, though, I’m quite happy. lol I want to keep the mountain all to myself! It’s a pretty and peaceful place.

After taking pictures at the peak and going to the bathroom, I used my computer to do a bit of preparation for work and studied some Japanese. But, it started to get unexpectantly dark and cold, so I decided to go home early. (It started raining while I was on my way home.)

Of course, when you climb a mountain, you have to get back down. For cyclists, the reward for climbing is the descent. You get to go fast without doing any work. A climb that took me 20 minutes to get up took only 5 minutes to get down. lol

But, being an amateur at going down long mountain roads like that, I did some really dangerous things. I think I stared into the Grim Reaper’s eyes about three times. When descending, you go really fast, making turning difficult and dangerous. As soon as you hit some gravel, you’ll fall over real fast. Since my top speed was around 48 miles per hour, if I fell over I’d probably have died. The first time the Reaper and I made eye contact was when I was making a turn too fast and nearly fell down the side of the mountain. I got some weeds on the edge of the road tangled up in my left pedal. The second time, I did nearly the same thing, but there was a guard rail, so it wasn’t quite as dangerous as the first time. But, even though I told myself to slow down, the third time, I put on the breaks too late. I felt like turning was impossible, panicked, and hit a guard rail head on! If it hadn’t been there, I’d have flow into the forest and hit a tree. I was pretty close to dying.

After checking the condition of my body and bike, it looked like my bike and I could still move, so I immediately continued on home, but the break lever bracket on my bike hit the rail and is bent. I’m gonna try to fix it myself, but I probably have to replace it. It’ll be expensive…

But, I’m still alive, so it’s okay. lol Next time, I’ll make sure to break properly. Going fast is fun, but living is more important.

A Journey to Asakura

This past weekend, I went to a place called Asakura on my bike. It was about 40 miles from where I live in Taku. I originally didn't plan on going to Asakura, but about one week ago, a friend living in Asakura said we should go cycling together around there, to which I jokingly replied, "First I need to get my bike to Asakura." I meant it as a joke, but then I started to wonder how far I could go, so I decided to take a journey east. About 40 minutes into my journey, I felt quite tired, so I took a break and ate something at a convenience store. After I got done eating, from the time I decided to give it one more push, I gradually started to regain energy, and was even able to get as far as Yoshinogari Park. The park was already closed, so I rested right outside.

Yoshinogari Park is quite far from where I live, so I had to decide whether to continue my journey east or to go home. On top of that, the sky was filled with dark clouds, so if I didn't go back at that time and later decided to go back home, then my chances of getting wet would go up. In other words, if I didn't go back then, going back would get harder and harder to do. But, I still had the will and strength to continue further, so I decided to push forward. After it got dark, I knew that I would be able to make it to Asakura. I contacted my friend and ended up staying at his place.

(That night, a storm rolled threw.)

The next day, my friend and I cycled to Akizuki, nicknamed "Little Kyoto", climbed a mountain, and then I went home. Right now, my legs are quite tired. lol But, I had a productive weekend. By the way, it's about 60 miles to Nagasaki from Taku, so I am planning on taking a trip there someday! The mountain roads on the way to Nagasaki are scary, though...

My first few days in Kobe

On the first of this month, my adventure in Kagoshima ended and my adventure in Kobe began. For the past three days I've been doing a bunch of stuff. Before studying abroad, there were things about life studying abroad here that I wanted to know, but that I wasn't told about, so I'm going to write about my experiences in detail for future students.

On the first day, I and my classmate met someone from the school and then he took us to the school, 10 minutes by foot. At that time, I was disappointed that we weren't shown around the school, but instead we were shown our apartments, which wasn't too bad. We went to the apartment in the school representative's car, introduced to the manager of the apartments, got our keys, and went to see our rooms. On the way there, two other girls that are also studying abroad introduced themselves, and helped show us our rooms.

One thing that I was a little worried about was the internet connection. But, a Wifi router was already setup and ready to go, so I connected to it easily.

After the tour of our rooms, the school rep returned to the school and the two ladies took us around town to the local supermarket, department store, etc. After we bought dinner for that night, we got some ID pictures printed and went back to our apartment. I also tried to use the ATM, but like the ATMs in Kagoshima, they didn't take my card (a VISA debit card with Chase bank).

But, that wasn't a problem. The next day, after cleaning my room a bit and eating some breakfast, the two girls took us to Tarumi station by bus where we got our resident cards registered, got some health insurance cards, and then we made bank accounts. After that, we'll be able to send money from our American accounts to our Japanese accounts. In order to do that, I contacted my bank and they told me that I'll need to activate wire transfers. It looks pretty easy, so future students would be wise to set that up in advance.

Today, we were taken to the school by foot. There were a bunch of people recruiting for clubs, and many of them talk to me and my classmate. About six clubs invited us! I wonder if that's normal? Afterward, we went to look at a nearby department store, and then we went back to the school to do some preparation for class. I'll write about this in another entry. A little after the preparation, we had some sort of health check I'm not sure why everybody has to do it, but whatever.

Ah, by the way, students that want to ride a bike here can relax. There are a few hills here in Kobe, but there are a lot of people riding bikes around here. Today, on my way to school, I took some pictures of people on their bikes.

My backpack stinks

Every week, when I ride my bike, I wear my backpack, too. Of course, when I commute to school, my back gets all sweaty and gross, and my backpack absorbs the sweat. For the last month or so, my backpack has gotten steadily smellier. My jacket got smelly too, and I washed it, but because it touches my backpack, it gets stinky easily. I need to clean my backpack...
