Mom

This week, I heard the stories of two women that made me think about the importance of mothers.

One woman left her rural home and went to the city to attend the funeral of her son. Her son had recently gotten divorced. She found out shortly afterward that he had committed suicide. In a note he left behind, he wrote that he was lonely. From what I’ve heard, the members of the woman’s family are not good at communicating. The woman and her son had not been in contact with each other much.

Unfortunately, this is not the first son of hers to commit suicide. Some years before, another son was the first. It’s likely that he was quite lonely, too, as you would expect of someone that decides that death is easier than living. What goes through the mind of a woman as she weeps over the body of her son a second time?

It’s a very sad story. To me, it’s a story that teaches that communication is important. Making and nurturing relationships is important. Humans aren’t suppose to be alone. If we are alone, we die. We need to communicate honestly and openly to develop good relationships with others.

The other woman is a new mother that wants to go back to work. However, it doesn’t appear that she has fully considered the costs of doing so. There are obvious financial costs to consider, such as gasoline and kindergarten fees, but the more important cost is the loss of time, as well as the future of her child.

In the very early stages of life, everything happening around a child is shaping their future. They most likely will have the personality they have at 7 years old for the rest of their lives, so it is most important during that time for them to have a lot of contact with their parents so that they can help their child develop healthy personality traits. Their educational success or failure is heavily influenced by their parents both in early childhood (parents who read to their children can increase their success in school dramatically) and later in life (parents that talk to their children about school and what they are learning dramatically increase their success in school). There are certain genes that can be activated by the environment their parents create (this is part of epigenetics) which can determine whether their children are criminals or not, or if they are sexually promiscuous or not.

To children, their mother is the most important person in the world for a long time, especially during early childhood. Of course, their father is very important, too, but they don’t directly recognize his influence on them until later in life. In the beginning, their mother gives them everything.

But then, many mothers drop their children off at a day-care or kindergarten for 8 or 9 hours a day. Imagine you’re a child. The most important person, at the most important time in your life, puts you in the care of complete strangers for hours and hours almost every day. How does that effect your life now and in the future?

And what does the mother gain? More money? Exactly how much more? Is she going to have a career, or just a job? Is she working to make more money to give her child things, or to buy things for herself? If for the child, which does the child want more: time with the most important person in their life, or more goddamn toys?

The question is: Why does a woman have a child if she doesn’t want to be a mother?

Let me tell you one of the main reasons the “strong working mother” myth was pushed on us: because feminists believed that they were in a power-struggle against men, and that for women to have more power, they needed to have money. If they aren’t dependent on men for money, then they can’t be dominated by them.

In essence, maintaining a career for a woman is an insurance policy: if the marriage doesn’t work out, she isn’t helpless.

Question: Is it a good idea to get married to someone with whom things “might not work out”? Women are preparing for the chance of divorce. Is it a good idea to go into an important relationship with the idea that “it might not work”?

Here’s an idea: How about getting married to the right person? You know, by talking and getting to know them first, and learning whether you two have similar plans in life for the future? How about thinking and acting consciously, rather than by momentum? How about getting married because you want to, not because you’re afraid of being alone? How about getting married to someone you love, rather than someone that’s convenient?

You don’t need a career, like feminists say you do. You need good relationships.

In the past, I struggled to recognize the influence my mom had on my personal development. That’s strange since, as I said before, she was the most important person in my life for a long time. Some important things about my character that I value most, like my ability to think for myself, I attribute to my dad. But, when I heard those two stories, I realized that my mom gave me something incredibly important: her time and her love. She gave me a comfortable home, good food, and protection. Before my dad taught me how to be a man, my mom taught me how to be a good person. She taught me how to read and how to cook scrambled eggs. She let me be who I wanted to be, even if I hurt her some times. She gave me an example of a good mother. Her honest relationship with my father was an example of a successful marriage with ups and downs, trust and forgiveness. She set the standards I have for good women.

My mom didn’t approach her motherhood as a hobby or part-time job. It was a full-time career that she devoted herself to. She committed wholeheartedly to her task. I am the result of her conscious, deliberate effort to make me into a good, healthy person. She didn’t pass the responsibility of making me into a good person on others.

When I look back on my life, although there were times when I felt lonely, I was never alone. Sometimes I didn’t have friends or companions, but I always had my mom. She wasn’t out in the fields or at the office, she was with me.

At home, she wasn’t sitting around “doing nothing”, she was developing her skill set as a mother. She was learning new recipes. She was developing a sense of interior decoration. She was experimenting with new cleaning methods and devices. She was observing my behavior and recognizing early when there was a problem. She was actively working to know the people in her life, rather than just letting them pass through her life as near complete strangers. She was keeping her home clean, no small task for someone with children and grandchildren constantly making messes everywhere. She was inviting guests into her home and spreading her love and generosity to others.

Her home wasn’t a cage and her children weren’t weights around her ankles holding her back from achieving some higher goal. Her home was her garden, the place where she developed her character through planning and experimentation, and where she passed the fruits of her labor on to the future through her children.

If your idea of motherhood is staying at home “doing nothing”, then either your mom was a bad example or you don’t appreciate what your mom did for you. Now would be a good time to reflect on your life and consider which is true.

Love that becomes a cage

***

I want to always work hard to become a better person. I’m not satisfied with staying the way I am now. Both mentally and physically, if you’re not moving forward, I think you’re just waiting to die.

But, the idea of being a “good” person or becoming a “better” person is a bit vague. Everybody has to determine for themselves what it means to be a “good” person. Of course, it means a lot of different things, but I’ll write about one aspect of what I think it means to be a good person.

A good person is someone that protects the people they love. Parents are one example. It goes without saying that parents protect their children. When it looks like their child is going to touch a hot pan or get hit by something, they yell “Look out!” They teach their children how to cross the road safely, about suspicious people, things like that. Parents instinctually protect their children.

But, when that instinct isn’t controlled, then parents become overprotective. For example, I heard that story of a father that was overprotective of his only daughter—and his only child. He loved his super cute daughter and thought to himself, “I’ll protect her no matter what!” He said to himself, “This child is my most precious treasure. Whether a 1,000 foot tall monster or powerful typhoon, I’ll protect my treasure from any and all danger!” To keep his daughter safe, he moved close to a good school and made sure she was safe every day. More than that, when the daughter he loved so much needed help, he listened closely to what his daughter told him, and then gave advice depending on the situation. No matter the problem, with her father’s help, she was able to fix the problem. They were very close father and daughter.

Even when the daughter got into junior high school and into high school, her father protected her. To protect her, the father had a rule that she had tomato an appearance at home every day at 6 o’clock. As the daughter got older, the rule started to bother her, but the father maintained the rule. Even when she was working at a part-time job, she had to be home at 6. If she wasn’t, he would call her cell phone and yell at her. The outside would is dangerous, so that rule was absolute. If she wasn’t home by 6:05, he would even call her employer and yell at the manager. “Why hasn’t my daughter come home yet?!” he’d yell. The daughter loved her father and was always asking for his advice, but she didn’t feel free. She hated that rule. She felt like she was trapped in a cage.

What do you think about that story?

Here’s what I think. I understand how the father felt. For sure, his only child was precious to him. He had to protect his daughter. When I imagine him helping his daughter when she didn’t know what to do, I’m filled with respect for him. I’d like to be a strong father like that.

But, the father was selfish. He was only considering his duty or feelings. And I think he either had forgotten, or didn’t understand, what his duty as a father is. His job isn’t to protect a precious treasure, but rather, to raise a daughter that can become an independent person. What else could such selfish “protection” be other than over-protection? When kids are still in elementary school, it’s good to give them a curfew. Their judgement abilities are still immature, so having a structured life is good for them. But, once kids get to be in high school, or in other words, once they start trying to become an adult, you have to give them their freedom. If you don’t, then a parent’s love becomes a cage.

But, it must have been difficult for the father to give his daughter the freedom she needed. There are all sorts of risks when you give your precious daughter freedom. If you release her into the real world, she might get hurt. She might meet bad men. Japanese business culture is bad, and it might have a negative effect on her. A daughter with strong emotions might get stressed out a lot. Your delicate daughter is trying to be free, but it’s still too soon. The father must has been filled with anxiety at the thought of all those risks.

A father filled with such anxiety will pass on that anxiety to his daughter. Thoughts like, “The outside world is dangerous! When it get’s dark, I absolutely have to go home!” probably get passed on. If a father does that, can you really say he’s protecting his daughter?

I don’t think you can.

Parents need to selflessly protect their children. Even if you’re worried, you have to give your children freedom. Real protection isn’t a cage, it’s light. In other words, a parent’s real love is the light of wisdom and knowledge.

Rather than saying,
“It’s dangerous, don’t go!”,
you should say,
“It’s dangerous! Here’s how you can protect yourself. Listen closely.”

If you teach your children about the realities of the outside world, about how to live in the real world, etc. then your children will be able to successfully become independent. And as a child gets bigger, you have to stop treating them like a child and start to treat them like an equal. I describe myself as bad with children, but, the truth is, it’s more accurate to say that I’m not good at treating kids like kids. I try to treat them like adults. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, though.

If parents pass on their knowledge and wisdom to their kids and give them freedom, then parents can obtain a complete kind of love. I think it’s the same as pets and wild animals. When you have a pet, you can have fun with them and watch how they act. Raising pets is fun. I’d had several pets throughout my life. I love animals.

But, don’t you get excited when you see a real wild animal doing what it does naturally? Don’t you think to yourself, “This is a real animal. Now THIS is nature”? It’s a world where beauty and brutality mix, but it’s real.

While children are still young, they’re like pets. But, once they become adults, they become like wild animals. Even if you keep a cat as a pet, they’re happy, but tigers are different. Tigers want to be free. They want to smell the forest. They want to sleep under the trees. They want to hunt prey. They want to play in the river. They want to fight other tigers, no matter how big or small a house is, it’s not fit for a tiger.

Parents have a duty to sacrifice their own feelings and to give their children freedom. Once they’ve fulfilled their duty, they’ll be able to feel true love. A father who looks at the daughter to whom he’s set free can finally say, “This is my daughter.”

I think that I often talk about parents. Now let’s switch things around. If a good parent protects the children they love and gives them their freedom, what does a good child do for the parents they love?

This is what I think. First, children have to learn a lot of different stuff from their parents. They have to listen to what they say, observe how they act, and understand the consequences of their actions. That’s fundamental. The first step to becoming an adult is to accept the knowledge and wisdom or your parents.

But, parents make mistakes. Doesn’t matter who you are, parents always will make mistakes and possibly hurt their children. Parents can’t see they future, and they can’t read their children’s minds. Raising kids is tough. There isn’t a parent out there that always know exactly what to do no matter what. At some point, you’re gonna make a mistake. You’ll accidentally hurt your kids. Human’s are just imperfect.

That’s why children need to accept their parents’ humanity. Going back to the father from before, it’s possible that he was hated by his daughter. The daughter might have felt bitter toward her father. But, someday, she needs to understand that even fathers make mistakes. She needs to understand her father’s weakness and work to avoid making the same mistakes herself. That’s her second duty as a child. Of course, she has to judge whether her father failed or succeeded as a father in light of the results of his actions. She probably can’t say that her father completely failed as a parent, but he did fail in part. The daughter has a duty to work hard not to repeat the same failure.

After that, she needs to understand that her father loved her, and that’s why he did the things he did. She needs to understand that he was selfish and that that’s bad, and then it’s okay for her to think, “But even still, I love him.” In other words, she needs to accept his weaknesses and forgive her father. Forgiveness is very important. If you don’t forgive, then your bitterness becomes a cage, and then you can never be free. Your heart and mind will always be locked inside that cage. In order to release your mind from the curse of the past, you have to forgive.

Both parents have weaknesses. Understanding both your parents’ strengths and weaknesses, putting their strengths together, and making them part of yourself is another one of a child’s duties. It’s the duty of a child to be smarter, stronger, and more beautiful than his or her parents. If you don’t, then what’s the point? Like I said, if you aren’t advancing, you’re just waiting to die.

And the final duty a child has is to be free. There are some kids that won’t accept freedom even if their parents give it to them. The parents are like, “Hey, I don’t care what you do, you can be an office worker, an artist, whatever, just make your dreams come true and live your life the way you want to”, but the kids don’t do anything. I was that kind of kid. A comedian I like has this joke about kids that don’t want to live on their own. They like ripe oranges that don’t want to separate from their tree. The tree say, “Get off me!”, shaking the branch to get the orange off, but it says, “No, I don’t wanna!” and holds on desperately to the branch. lol For sure, I was that kind of orange. But, children need to become adults. Freedom is scary. You don’t know what to do. You can’t see the future. You don’t know anything, so you just decide to try to stay the way you are.

You have to work actively to become free in order to avoid feeling that anxiety about the future. You have to move. You have to go to the outside world. You have to experience all kinds of stuff. You have to fail. And then you have to learn from your failure. You have to keep advancing.

Be free. Get out of the cage!

What kind of person have I become? What kind of person do I want to be?

***

For the past two weeks, I went back to the US and spent time with my parents. For the most part, I just spent time at home and talked with them, but we also went out together a bit, too.

When it comes to relationships with others, communication is important. That’s something that my parents taught me. I feel blessed to be able to talk about anything with my parents. Since we can say anything, even if we have heated arguments and even fight, we still have a strong bond. Our relationship goes beyond a normal parent-child relationship. I respect and love them as not just parents, but as friends as well.

That precisely why when my dad said to me, “Micah, you’ve changed”, I wanted to know how I’d changed.

“Really?”

“Yeah. Do you feel like you’ve changed?”

“Yeah, I’ve changed.”

“How do you think you’ve changed?”

“In a bunch of ways. I’m healthier physically and mentally than I’ve ever been in my life. I’m happier and stronger than I’ve ever been, I think. I’m more arrogant and selfish as well.”

“Do you think that’s a good thing?”

“Yeah. What do you think?”

“I think it’s a bad thing.”

“You’re saying that, in general, you think my changes are bad?”

“Yeah, I think so.”

After that we talked more about why he that my changes were bad. However, since my dad has a tendency to speak “around” things, he never clearly told me how he thought my changes were bad. That bad habit of his irritated me, so I told him several times, “Just say it clearly! You’re always thinking about what you say, like a politician that carefully chooses every single word they say.”

After spending time with my parents, observing how they live and listening closely to the things that they said, for the first time I thought, “I don’t want to be like these people.” My parents are very kind, smart, and truly good parents. But then why do I say that I don’t want to be like them?

In a word, because they’re weak.

Generally speaking, it’s not entirely accurate to say that they’re weak because they were strong, raised me and my sisters well, taught us how to be good people, and were generally good role models. However, they have some critical weaknesses.

First off, since I was a child, my parents never really took good care of their health. Until recently, they ate food with lots of sugar, hardly ever exercised, etc. If you were to ask my they aren’t taking good care of their health, I say that it’s probably because they either don’t really care about their health, or that they have been influenced by some problem in the past. As they got older, maybe that accepted that they’d get fatter and that their bodies would deteriorate? When it comes to their health, I have a feeling that there are things they can control, but in spite of that, they ignore those things, give up, and accept their fate. Either that, or maybe instead of physical things, they prioritize mental and spiritual things, and ignore the condition of their bodies? Or maybe they haven’t thought carefully about things in the past, and are simply living on momentum? I don’t know what they’re thinking, so I can only guess the causes of their weakness.

“Papa, all your children are independent and out of the house, so what do you think your job is as a parent now?”

“Just to give advice and be a good role model for them, I guess.”

Yeah, I think so too. Taking advantage of their experience and giving advice is important. Being a good role model is important, too. I think that now, as parents, they can do things to support their children.

I have three older sisters and one younger sister. My younger sister is obese, and if she continues on like that, chances are high that she’ll get diabetes like our grandmother did and will live a very difficult life. She’s still young, so being obese for the next 3, 40, or 50 years would be a waste.

“Papa, how do you think you can support her to help her get healthy?”

“Hmm, not sure. What do you think?”

“First, I’d say that it would be good for you to tell her that she has a problem. Next, after she begins living a healthier life, you can support her in various ways. You could feed her food that follows her diet when she comes to your house, stuff like that.”

“Even more importantly,” I continued, “you can become a good role model for her.”

If my dad continues living his life without losing weight, even if he tries to give my sister advice on how to lose weight, it won’t really have much of an effect on her. Who takes nutritional advice from a fat person?

In the end, I concluded by saying, “Papa, I want you to understand that your job as a parent is not over yet.”

A few years ago, I realized that, in order to protect and support other people, I needed to become a stronger person. I needed to leave my parents’ house, become independent, and take care of my health. And then recently, I realized one other thing. In order for me to raise a family well, I needed to become a good role model. In addition to searching for a woman that would be a good role model as a mother, becoming a good role model as a father myself is important, too. That’s why I decided to face my own weaknesses and not continue on the momentum of the past. That means that I decided to do something different from my dad and change my own history.

My parents have one other weakness, and that’s the tendency to avoid confrontation. My mom is especially afraid of confrontation, so she tries as much as possible to avoid it. She passive aggressive. She isn’t always passive aggressive, but when she feels threatened, she often looks away and says something passive aggressive. I inherited that habit from her, so until recently, I some passive aggressive stuff as well. And in general, I avoided conflict. I especially avoided conflict with my mom. When I made my mom angry or sad, I always apologized.

However, that situation became unbearable to me. I said what I thought was right, regardless of how my mom felt, and even if I made her sad, I refused to apologize. Usually, my mom just sadly accepted my behavior without even saying anything directly to me. She was probably thinking that I was such a nice son, but now I had completely changed.

If I thought that I was in the right, then it was right for me to not apologize. However, my transformation was not yet complete. If you asked why, it’s because I was still avoiding conflict with my mom and didn’t talk to her directly about the problems I had. That’s why things were a bit tense around the house, and we weren’t able to really understand each other. I didn’t yet have the courage to face the conflict.

However, now it’s different. While I was in the car with my parents, I said something to my mom, to which she replied passive aggressively. I responded by saying, “Did I hurt your feelings?” in a sarcastic manner. With that, the conversation ended. My mom ran away from the conflict. Conversely, I tried to start a conflict. Unfortunately, my mom still didn’t have the courage to face me.

Fundamentally, I think the source of the tendency to avoid conflict is fear. In American and Japanese society, a lot of people are burdened by fear. For example, one of my older sisters has a daughter. From my sister’s house to school it’s a very short walk, but my sister feels it’s too dangerous, so she takes her daughter to school by car. I absolutely hate that, and I understand the terrible influence that kind of fear has on both society and my sister’s daughter, but my mom feels the same way as my sister. I tried to convince her that it wasn’t good, but it was no use.

On the other hand, in Japan, I’ve often seen young girls walking around by themselves in large cities! Whenever I seem them wearing a pretty little dress, a backpack on their back, and a hat on their heads, walking around a big city, I always laugh. That’s one of the special things about Japan.

However, when teachers aren’t at school, they aren’t allowed to associate with the students. I believe the reason is because of the fears of the students’ parents. They are afraid that teachers will do something bad to their children, so schools prohibit teachers from associating with students outside school. Of course, it’s possible teachers might do something bad, but why don’t the kids just teach their children bad behavior to look for and how to defend themselves against it? On top of not taking responsibility for raising their children, because they’re afraid their children can’t defend themselves, they never talk to their children about that stuff.

I hate the fears I have inside me, so I’m working hard to get rid of them. As my fears slowly disappear, I become stronger. On the other hand, my dad is different from my mom. He doesn’t have any fear at all. Even in my 20’s I didn’t understand the strength of my dad’s fearlessness, but now I understand and want to mimic him.

Those are the reasons why I said that I don’t want to be like my parents. In other words, I don’t want to be like that, I want to be a better version of them. I want to internalize their strengths and expel their weaknesses from inside me. To do that, I am searching my heart and trying to identify those strengths and weaknesses. I’m doing my best to follow my own path in life.

Papa, Mom, you may not understand what I’m thinking, but even so, I want you to trust me. And someday, I’d like to become the kind of person that you would like to mimic.

Family time and critical thinking

Do you watch TV with your family and dinner time? I recently have heard the story of a British man who is married to a Japanese woman. They live with her mother and father in Tokyo. At night, his wife and her family enjoy watching TV together. However, the British man doesn’t. He says that Japanese TV is very boring (I agree), and that when he eats dinner with them, he wants to talk, not watch TV.

Strangely, his wife’s family considers time watching TV and commenting on the celebrities to be important family time. One night, while they were watching TV, the man tried to use his smartphone to look at things he was interested in, but his wife’s parents asked him to put his smartphone away! When I read that, I couldn’t help but laugh.

In my family, my dad said, “No TV at dinner time.” He felt it was very important for our family to sit and spend time talking with each other. I wholeheartedly agree. I believe strongly that it is important for family members to get to know each other, and the only way to do that is to talk. Talking about school, work, politics, hobbies, etc. helps parents stay up to date with the way their children are growing and gives them a chance to guide them. For a father, it is especially important to have that time because he spends a considerable amount of time away from his children. If a father is not careful, his children will change and he won’t know how they are changing.

It’s interesting how technology has changed, but parental challenges have not significantly changed. When I was a kid, my dad turned off the TV at dinner time. These days, I think responsible parents would turn off their smartphones, too. Unfortunately, many parents don’t really understand the significance of quality time spent talking with their family, whether in America or Japan. At dinner time, the British man’s wife’s family often looks at his baby daughter and says, “Look, she’s watching the TV, isn’t that cute!” They think it’s cute, but he is terrified by that.

Another story he told was about an argument he had with his wife about a “Japanese culture” thing. I can’t remember the details, but his wife wants to go to a shrine to have a priest bless her because she is at a “bad” age. When the British guy asked her why it’s a bad age, she said, “Because that’s what they say.” He said he didn’t think she needed to be blessed, but she insisted that it was “Japanese culture” and that she needed to do it. When he tried to reason with her, asking her questions to understand more about the reasons and why it was so important, she just said, “Enough,” or, “It’s just Japanese culture, you wouldn’t understand,” and didn’t want to talk about it anymore.

Another downside of not talking at the dinner table is that children don’t get to learn how to think critically from their parents. I often argued with my parents about religious and political things at the dinner table and other times. My dad often forced me to think critically by asking simple questions. Those arguments were, I believe, a critical part of my intellectual development as a teenager and even into my college years.

Because the British man’s wife had no such experience either at home or at school, when she is forced into a situation where she needs to critically examine and explain her behavior or values, she is unable to. The brain is a muscle, and the critical thinking part of her brain is atrophied.

Honestly, I have distanced myself from many Japanese women that I thought were childish like that or said things like “Enough” in order to end discussions about various things. I simple can’t tolerate people that try to shut down important conversations. In my family, my mom often got frustrated with my dad because he would make strange arguments and wouldn’t admit they were strange. In those situations she would say, “Fine,” to which my dad would ask, “Why are you so frustrated?” lol I often got frustrated with my dad, but neither he nor I ever said, “Fine,” or “Enough”. I sometimes said that he was being ridiculous or even stupid, but I always continued the argument.

I have a feeling the British guy is going to have some difficult discussions with his wife in the future. He doesn’t want to raise his daughter the way that his wife was raised, so he is going to need to be careful about asserting himself in the future. He said he was happy, so I hope him continued happiness as he faces life's challenges together with his family.

両親・Parents

Together with my parents

My last pizza

***

Today, I am leaving the US and going back to Japan. Right now, I am in either in an airport or in an airplane. I want to write a little bit about the last 2 weeks.

Two weeks ago, I went to Washington to see my family. It had been one and a half years since I’d seen my parents. The house was a little different, but my parents were still the same. As usual, my mom enjoys making sweets with chocolate in them. And as usual, my dad likes to argue. They have a new puppy, but otherwise, nothing has changed.

For me, spending time with my family was most important. When I think about the past two weeks, I’m satisfied with all the time I spent with my parents.

My parents showed me that they care about me a lot. When my mom asked me what I wanted to eat the most, I told her, “Pizza,” so she fed me pizza practically every day.

On top of that, one day, there was a storm, so my mom unplugged my dad’s computer. After my dad got home, he wanted to plug his computer back in, so he had to move a heavy piece of furniture and kneel down in a narrow place to do so. So, I helped him a bit with it. Afterward, my dad hugged me and said, “I love you, Micah. I almost cried when I thought that you will going back to Japan in a few days.”

Then, on another day, I organized the stuff I had left behind in the US, like books, shoes, etc. and then decided what I’d take with me and what I would throw away. After I looked in some boxes with my mom, I went back inside the house and started using my computer. Then my mom came up to me, with tears in her eyes, hugged me, and said, “I’m glad you’re happy, but I miss you so much.”

When I think about what they said, I realized that I need to really work hard. I need to work hard at my ALT job, studying Japanese, on my photography, etc. While talking to my dad, I told him I wasn’t really interested in traveling. When my dad heard that, he thought a bit and then said, “While you’re in Japan, you should make the most of every day there. I thought that because I’m frugal, I’m not interested in traveling, but now, since I don’t have any money problems, I came to think that maybe I could splurge a bit. If I travel and take pictures and videos, the trip might not only be for fun, but it may also have an influence on my future career. I think I should invest in myself without letting my current opportunities pass me by.

I’m living in a foreign country, but I’m still not taking any risks. It might feel safe to continue only saying my money, but it’s actually the opposite. I’m not moving forward, which is very unsafe.

In only two weeks, my parents were able to teach me something very important.
