Japan Had a Weird Culture in the Past

This quarter, I've been learning all kinds of stuff about Japanese culture and history. Well, the class is normal, but Japanese past culture was really weird. The culture of the Heian period was especially weird, but Japanese people up until the end of the Edo period did some strange stuff. It was so weird that even my teacher, a Japanese person, says that it was weird. For example, my class' first textbook this quarter was The Tale of Genji. We didn't read the whole thing, but from what we read, people during that time were kinda feminine. On top of that, they shaved their eyebrows, blackend their teeth, and would easily have sex with other people.

In Europe, historically they had a similar sex-related culture, but even people during the Edo period seem to have had that culture. Because of influence from Christianity, sex was considered dirty in Europe. (It's different now, though.) So, they lacked the freedoms found in Edo-period Japan.

What was even weirder was the culture of committing suicide easily. I don't know if it's just something from novels and movies, but there were times when really young people would commit suicide for the sake of love or because they suddenly lost their preferred lifestyle. In the movie called Double Suicide, a married man and a prostitute promise to, and eventually do, commit suicide together. I'm not sure why they didn't just run away to a different city or village and start a new life together. In other books I see that same culture of easy-suicide, so all I can do is assume that it's historically accurate, but since we don't have that kind of culture in Western culture, it's hard to believe that it actually existed.
