学生への手紙・A Letter to a Student

秀俊へ


へいー、秀俊、マイカですよ。元気ですか？

今、どこにいるんだろう？お家にいるかな？飛行機なのかな？ホテルなのかな？

小さい多久から大きい東京まで、大きい大会に参加しに行っていますね。たぶん、ドキドキとワクワクしていますね。僕も。東京で秀俊を見て、応援したいです。行けなくて、すみませんね。

2ヶ月前、初めて練習していた時に、とても驚きました。僕はこう言って、こう発音してと言ったりしたら、秀俊はすぐに完璧に真似できました！そして、次の日にまた練習した時、すぐに思い出しました！すごい。それは普通じゃないです。特別ですよ。

その時、秀俊は化け物だということがわかりました。

そして、先月、佐賀の大会で他の参加者を見ました。その中には秀俊にかなう者がいませんでした。でも、その後、他の化け物が現れました。秀俊は２位を取ったら、自慢でした。

それでは、秀俊は東京に行くことになりましたね。そちらの大会は違いますよ。秀俊は全国から来た化け物に囲まれます。佐賀の戦いは簡単だったけど、東京の戦いは困難です。

しかし、秀俊は化け物です。緊張しているけれど、戦うことを楽しみにしています。戦いたいです。弱い敵じゃなくて、強い敵を倒したいです。

さてと、時間ですよ、秀俊。準備はいい？

大切なことは過去ではなくて、将来ではなくて、この瞬間だということを忘れないでください。東京の舞台で立っていて、おばあさんの話をみなさんに語ったら、一つ一つの言葉を全身全霊で言ってください。

Dear Hidetoshi,

Hey Hidetoshi, it’s Micah. How are you?

I wonder where you are now? Are you at home? On the airplane? In a hotel?

You are going from small Taku to big Tokyo so that you can compete in a big contest. You are probably nervous and excited. I am, too. I want to watch you and support you in Tokyo. I’m sorry that I can’t be there.

Two months ago, when we first practiced your speech, I was very surprised. When I told you how to say a word, you could say it perfectly! Then, the next day, when we practiced again, you remembered! Amazing. That’s not normal. That’s special.

I knew then that you were a monster.

Then last month, I saw the other students at the speech contest. They were not at your level. But, then some other monsters appeared. I was proud when you got second place.

Now you are going to Tokyo. That competition will be different. You will be surrounded by monsters from all over Japan. The battle in Saga was easy, but the one in Tokyo will be difficult.

However, you’re a monster. You are nervous, but you are also excited to fight. You want to fight. You want to defeat the strong opponents, not the weak ones.

Well, Hidetoshi, it’s time to fight. Are you ready?

Remember, the important thing is not the past, not the future, but this moment. When you stand on that stage in Tokyo, when you tell everybody your grandma’s story, say each word with all your heart.
