I quit volunteering

***

Around two weeks ago, I decided to quit volunteering. Since not just me, but also my teacher, some assistants, and the staff at the mall worked together on the volunteer project, I feel like I wasted their time. Since I lost the desire to continue volunteering, I didn't feel that I would be able to make learning material or do a good just teaching in the classroom. If I continued in spite of losing the desire to do so, I felt that I would just waste even more of everyone's time. I didn't want to disappoint everyone, but there was no way around it.

After thinking about why I lost my desire to continue, several reasons come to mind.

1. Even though I'm not so good with kids, when the teacher presented the opportunity to volunteer as a teacher to elementary school kids, I agreed to do it without thinking about it. I have a bad habit of agreeing to things without thinking about them, so this a failure on my part.

2. I didn't really communicate well. I didn't really talk much with my assistants, so on top of not know what I should do with them, I didn't really get to know them or bond with them. When they and my teacher were discussing stuff, since my Japanese is still not good enough, I couldn't really insert myself into their conversations.

3. In the beginning, I wanted to teach the kids, but, they didn't really seem to want to study, so my desire to teach them went away. I think this is another failure on my part. The kids might not have wanted to study, but they did want to play. If I had thought about playing in English, in other words, getting out of the classroom and playing the way they want to while teaching them English, I don't think I would have lost my desire to teach (or play with) them.

4. In the beginning, I was happy to get advice from many different people, but their advice steadily started to put pressure on me. Some said that they would leave it up to me to decide how to teach, but I didn't really feel like that was true. Several people watched the way I taught and really seemed to be expecting something. It would have been good for me to have more confidence and have said to just leave everything to me, but if they had left everything to me, I wouldn't have known what to do, so I couldn't tell them to leave everything to me.

5. The whole thing started being called a "classroom", so it became a place to study and my goal, even to myself, became unclear.

6. The process of deciding the goal of the volunteer work and deciding what to teach felt too formal and rigid.

7. While we had discussions, I felt that the kids' individuality was being forgotten.

Well, lots of stuff happened, but it's over now. I realized a few things from this experience.

1. Before agreeing to do something like volunteering, I need to really think about it first.

2. In the future I need to really map out a goal and focus on it.

3. I need to have more confidence in myself.

4. When teaching kids, I have to first do stuff to get to know them.

5. I need to know my limitations and just do the things that I can do. (For example, since I've never had any formal training on ways of teaching, instead of trying to teach like a teacher, I should teach like a coach or a friend.
