When I study in Japan, I'm going to go to many different places and see many new things, so for the last month or two I've been seriously considering buying a new camera. But, since I'm an indecisive person, I still haven't decided what kind of camera I'm going to buy. I've narrowed the list to two cameras. However, I have to think about lenses as well as cameras. No matter how much I think about it, I still don't know what kind of lenses I should buy.
I'll show you what I've researched so far. I want to explain it so even people who don't know much about cameras can understand, so I really need to understand camera vocabulary in Japanese. I think this entry will be good practice for me!
Now then, first comes the camera. When I studied in Japan in 2011, I took the camera below with me.
The Olympus XZ-1 is a really good camera! It's small and light, so I was able to take it with me anywhere. Because I would be able to take lots of pictures and because the lens was the best among compact cameras at the time, I bought it. Even now when I'm riding my bike, I wear it around my neck and can stop to take pictures any time I want.
However, even this camera has some limitations. It's video capabilities aren't so great, and because it's built in, I can only use one lens. On top of that, it's especially poor in low light conditions. The lens is quite bright, but the sensor can only go up to 400 ISO before the picture quality degrades. If you go higher than 400 ISO, if you take a picture and print it out, you'll be able to see quite a bit of noise. Well, as long as you look at it on a computer or smartphone it should look fine, though.
Because of that, I want to get a Micro Four-Thirds camera. If you compare compact cameras to m43 cameras, the m43s will have a couple of advantages.
- The sensor is bigger, so in general the picture quality will be better on the m43.
- You can exchange lenses.
Of course, advantages can be seen as disadvantages. As the sensor gets bigger, the camera and lenses will get bigger and heavier. You can exchange lenses, but carrying around a bunch of lenses while walking around can be inconvenient. That's especially a problem with DSLRs. However, the sensors on m43 cameras aren't as big as those on DSLRs, so most m43 cameras aren't that big.
Hm, this entry is kind of long, so I try explaining some details on cameras in my next entry.
