I want to be a person that chases after difficult things

Yesterday, I watched an interesting podcast. The host of the podcast was talking to a hunter, and the hunter said, “I have always been attracted to difficult things.” He does things that aren’t simply challenging, but life-threatening. He climbs dangerous mountains, hunts dangerous animals, things like that, all the time. In order to carry large animals he hunted down those mountains, he works out a lot.

He said, "Everyday, if I don't feel beat down or tired, I don't feel like I've achieved what I needed to achieve that day."

Actually, I can understand how he feels. Last semester, when I would get home after riding my bike home from school in the pouring rain for about 15 minutes, I felt a great sense of satisfaction. It felt like I had fought with the weather itself. When the teacher asks me to do something with not much time to do it, and then I finish it in time, I feel a sense of satisfaction.

Like other people, I have a tendency to avoid discomfort, but I think that tendency gets in the way. When the host of the podcast say, “The call of the bed is strong”, it reminded me of a manga called Attack on Titan. In the story, after a character named Eren Jaeger awakens the ability to turn into a titan (like a giant), during an important part in the story, he isn’t able to properly control that ability. While he is inside the body of the titan, he has a dream and in the dream he says, “I’m going to sleep.” But, a friend of his that was risking his life in an incredibly dangerous situation shouted, “Wake up!” Eren’s friend showed up inside his dream, and then Eren asked, “Why do I have to go outside?”

When I watched that part in the anime, I didn’t really get the meaning of it, but when I read it in the manga, I suddenly got it. In the world of Attack on Titan, titans basically dominate humans, humans live inside a large wall, and the area where humans can live is gradually shrinking. If they go to the outside world beyond the wall, they have to fight the titans. If they stay inside and do nothing, then humanity will be wiped out. Thus they are put in the position of needing to choose between fighting the titans in the outside world or staying behind the wall where it is “safe”. Eren decided to fight, but in spite of that, in the situation before, he revealed his weakness. You could say that he revealed his humanity.

Everyday, I say to myself, “I don’t want to get up,” but since I have to go to work, I get up. But still, I avoid taking risks. I live in a foreign country, but ever since I got comfortable, I stopped feeling like taking risks. I went back to the old Micah. Because of that, I need to consciously get out of bed, and explore the outside world. Like the hunter from before, I need to chase after the difficult and dangerous things. If something hurts, or if something is scary, I should see it as something good.

What’s more, whenever I think that doing something would be a waste of time, I need to say to myself, “What proof do I have that it will be a waste of time? If I don’t try, I’ll never know. Wouldn’t doing nothing actually be a waste of time?” Humans are good at negotiating with ourselves. We all have a voice inside us that says, “Do you really feel like doing that? Why? Won’t it be hard? How do you know that anything good will come from doing it? Won’t it just be a waste of time? Won’t it feel bad? If you do it, it’ll just be wasted effort. If you just stay here and play, that’ll be good, right? Won’t that feel better?” A person on a diet has a voice that says, “One cookie won’t do any harm, will it?”, and an alcoholic’s voice says, “Just one drink. Just one.” So, to that voice you have to say, “Why are you saying that? What do you want? Why are you getting in my way? I don’t like people that try to say the things I want to hear.”

I think I’ll go to the outside world and chase after the difficult and dangerous things.
